MapQuest Find Me delivers personalized, location aware information directly to your BlackBerry with a minimum number of keystrokes. The handset application consists of a main menu with 4 key features: Find Me., Find Nearby, Address Book and Settings. Option menus provide numbered items that enable you to maneuver with the press of one button on most screens. There are a few field input screens where you use standard BlackBerry input conventions.
At any point you can run
MapQuest Find Me in the background. In background mode, you can use all your BlackBerry functions and still be updating your location data on the BlackBerry (and on the web site if you have visibility set to 'ON'.) To do this, press the
ALT key (key on the lower left next to the 'Z') and the "
Escape" button (located under the
trackwheel) at the same time. Your default screen will be displayed and you can make phone calls, read emails, and access other menu options. To return to the program, select
MapQuest Find Me
from the main menu and press the
trackwheel.
MapQuest Find Me has 5 types of screens:
- Menu items for traversing the application (These can be icons or list items)
- Input Fields
- Reported or Textual information
- Pop-up Selections
- Radio Button Selections
The start-up screen for
MapQuest Find Me is an icon menu. Use the
trackwheel to highlight the icon for the desired function and click the
trackwheel to select.
Menu items and pop-up selections are usually numbered lists. For pop up lists with less than 10 items, you can press the number assigned to that item to select it. For any item in a list, you can move the cursor to highlight the item and click the trackwheel to select it. The list of Points of Interest (POI) is an example of this type of menu.
Screens that contain input fields are used to enter variable information. A screen containing a zip code field for proximity searching or a field to name an address that you want to save in the Address Book are examples of these types of screens.
Radio Button selections are similar to the radio buttons you find on web pages. You move the cursor over them and then press the trackwheel to set that radio button to 'ON'. The GPS Interval screen is an example of Radio Button selection.
Pop-up Selections are screens displayed over another screen. The bottom screen has information to be acted on and the top screen contains the list of actions to be performed. You can see an example of this type of screen when you press the trackwheel while the cursor is on an address in the Address Book. You can close a pop-up selection screen without selecting anything by choosing the 'hide' element in the pop-up list. The easier way to close a pop-up screen is to just press the
Escape button below the
trackwheel on your handset.
Reported or Textual Information screens are usually data you requested. The screen could contain the driving directions or the Privacy Statement where there is no interaction required.
All basic maneuvering can be done with the
Trackwheel and the
Escape button. If there are multiple actions that can be performed, a pop-up box will appear and you can use the
trackwheel to cursor to the action you want to perform. Then click on the
trackwheel to perform that action.
The MapQuest Find Me Home screen displays 4 icons that correspond to the key features of the service.

If 'Visibility' is set to 'Off', when the most recent location data is sent to the web, it just retrieves the MapQuest address and map data. That information is sent to the handset for display. To use Find Me on the web, login to your account with the user name and password you created by following the steps in section:
Creating Your Web Account. In your browser, enter the url:
http://findme.mapquest.com and enter your user name and password in the two fields on the page.
NOTE: If you have forgotten your password, click on the 'Forgot My Password' link and you can use the information on your handset to have your user name and a new password sent to you at the email address you entered when you created your web-based Find Me account.
After you login, a location screen with multiple levels of functionality is displayed. The tabs on the top of the page maneuver you through the 4 main areas of your account:
These are described in subsequent sections of this document.
The default view when you first login is the address and map of the last known location of your handset. You will always return to this view when you select the Find People tab. You can determine that you are in the 'Find People' section by the muted color of the 'Find People' tab and the content of the screen. If there is no available GPS map location data for your handset or your visibility is set to 'OFF', you will not see a map, but a message indicating that there is no location data for this handset. To see location data for a handset,'visibility' must be turned 'ON' in the Settings section of MapQuest Findme on your handset and you must have obtained a GPS position with your handset. You cannot change the visibility setting via the web site.
The sections of the Location screen are:
- The tabs on the top of the screen which maneuver you to other sections of the account.
- Links displayed under the tabs which manage the view of the current map and addresses
- Map and Address frames which display the address text and map based on the link you have selected for the current view.
- Under the map, are two links that manage the display of the map. You can refresh to get the most recent data displayed or you can create a large, easy-to-read, zoomable map.
- At the lower right corner, if you have been invited to share locations with another MapQuest Findme user, you will see a message indicating the number of pending invitations in your account.
The first row of links determines whose data to display. You can choose to only look at your data (default) by selecting 'Me'.
MapQuest Find Me has 4 groups to which you can assign other
MapQuest Find Me users:
- Family
- Friends
- Work
- Others
You can also elect to view all of the handsets in your account (union of all the groups).
You can invite and be invited (similar to instant messaging applications) to have your location viewed by friends, family or co-workers. Invitations are two way and if your invitation was accepted by another MapQuest Find Me user with visibility set to On their handset, their location will be viewable to you. You just select the group you assigned them to and you will see a thumbnail view of their location and others in that group.
To view the current location of members of a specific group, click on that link. If you choose 'Friends', a screen containing thumbnail maps and addresses of the latest known position of each person in that group will be displayed.
NOTE: each person must have visibility set to ON on their handset in order to be viewable on the web site. If any individual sets their visibility to OFF, their position will not be available to be viewed on the web and a text message will be displayed in place of their map indicating that visibility must be on in order for location data to be displayed.
The thumbnail maps are not interactive. You can view the current locations for all handsets by pressing the Map of All button on the bottom of the page. This will create one interactive, zoomable map with data points for each handset in your account. Each phone will be represented by an icon which is defined in the right hand frame with the handset's label and current location. Pressing the Details for the handset in the address frame zoom in to the current location for that handset.
MapQuest Find Me stores data for the current day and the previous day. The timeframe displays you can choose are:
- Latest - displays the latest data point for the handset(s)
- Today - displays the routes and locations stored today for the selected handset
- Last 24 Hours - displays the routes and locations stored for the last 24 hours for the selected handset
- Yesterday - displays the routes and locations stored yesterday for the selected handset
If you have chosen your own location to view, the timeframe links are displayed above the map and address section of the screen. The large red dot indicates the last position stored for the handset.
For any of the time frames chosen except Latest, you will also see a route showing MapQuest's best estimate of the routes taken for that time period given the GPS locations stored.
If you chose to view locations for a group or all handsets, the screen will not contain the timeframe links. The links with multiple data points are only available for one handset at a time. You will, however see a page with multiple maps and addresses. There will be one map/address for each handset in the group. The map will display the most recent location stored for each handset. Each map/address contains a link labeled Details. This link will display a larger, zoomable map. At this point you can choose the timeframe to see multiple data points for this handset.
If you choose to view all the individual handset current locations on one map by clicking on View Map of All will have one map with multiple icons on it and to the right of the map, a scrollable frame listing the most recent location data for each handset. The most recent location will be a link that will zoom in to that location on the current map. To choose a time frame for an individual handset, you will need to go back to the thumbnail view and select Details for the handset you want to view.
Once you have a page with the interactive map displayed, you can manipulate the map in a number of ways. The maps use the same manipulation conventions as the maps on the MapQuest.com site.
By default, clicking on the interior of the map frame will make that point the center point of the map. At the bottom of the map, you can set this action (clicking on the interior of the map) to Zoom. Then every click on the map will zoom in one more zoom level until the lowest zoom level is reached. You can also set the zoom level by clicking on a rung on the zoom ladder on the left side of the map.
You can pan the map by using the pan triangles on the border of the map.
The Refresh below the map will update the map with the most recent location data in the database.
The View Large Map button will open a new window with a larger, interactive map that you can perform the same manipulations on. This page has no frame with addresses in it. It just contains the map and manipulation links. To close the large map and return to the previous page, just close the browser window.
The Address Book tab gives you access to the entries in your MapQuest Find Me Address Book. You can create new entries or edit or delete current entries. Addresses are also entered into the Address Book from the handset when you elect to save a location after a search or when you elect to save an address of a MapQuest Find Me user location/address in the Find People.
The initial AddressBook screen contains a list of all the addresses in your address book. On the AddressBook screen is a button : Add Location. Pressing this button will display a form with Name and Address fields. Enter the information for an address you wish to save. Press the Next button to display a map of that address. If you are satisfied that all the information for that address is correct and that the map displays the correct location, press the Next button to save this entry into your address book.
Press the Back button to return to the previous screen to modify the address information.
Press the Cancel if you do not want this data entered into your address book. Cancel or Next return you to the front page of the address book.
On the front page of the address book, you can delete addresses or edit them by choosing the appropriate link.
The addresses in your address book are sent to your phone when you start the MapQuest Find Me application on your handset or when you choose Refresh Screens under settings on your handset. They are also updated on your handset if you select the Refresh book option item in the option list associated with the address book on your handset. The addresses in your address book can only be deleted by users designated as Administrative users in your MapQuest Find Me account.
Your handset will only download the 20 most recent addresses in your on-line address book.
MapQuest Find Me provides an alerting service for addresses and handsets in your account. For any address in your address book and any handset in your account, you can have an email or SMS text message alert sent to the person with the master user account. The alerts tab is only available to users with 'Admin' status. If you have created user accounts for others to view locations in your account, they will not see the Alerts tab when they log into the site.
When you select the
Alerts tab, the initial view will be a list of the alerts you have already created. The columns are:
- Location Name of the alert location. This will be an address found in your address book
- Phone Name or label of the phone in your account that will trigger the alert
- Event Type of trigger: Enter (<-) ; Exit (->); Both (<=>)
- Edit|Delete Links for editing and deleting existing alerts.
To create an alert, click on the Create New Alert button on the right hand side of the screen. This will create a screen with two columns. The first column will contain a list of locations from your address book preceded by radio buttons. The second column will be a list of handsets in your account. Select one from each column. You are selecting the handset and place you want to monitor.
When you press the Next button, the next screen displays the Location and phone you chose as well as a thumbnail map of the location with a circle around it. The circle indicates the radius which defaults to 660 feet. You can make the radius larger or smaller by changing the number in the radius field.
The radius can be very small but it will be ineffective. GPS accuracy is accurate within 50 meters. If you make the alert smaller than that, you could get false alerts or so many that it becomes a nuisance.
Select an Alert Event. The address is defined as the area of the circle the radius creates around the address. You can choose to be notified if a handset enters the address, exits the address or whenever the handset moves into or out of the address area .
Indicate which notification method or methods you want to use. When an alert is triggered by a handset crossing the boundary of the address (defined by the radius), you can be sent an email or an SMS text message or both. Since you registered with both an email address and a phone number, MapQuest Find Me can use either or both of these notification methods. Select the method(s) by checking the check box(es).
Press Nextto store this alert in your account. The alerts are effective immediately.
After an alert is created, you can change the following properties of the alert:
- Radius Defines the boundaries of an address.
- Alert Event Defines when an alert should be sent.
- Alert Method Defines how an alert will be delivered.
If you want to change the handset, you need to create a new alert for the location and new handset.
When you select 'Viewers', a screen displays a list of all the web-site users you have created. There are two types of users:
Whether creating or editing a user, the same form is displayed. Enter the first and last name of the user. Then enter a user name and password and password confirmation. The user name must be unique within the MapQuest Find Me database of Find Me users. Even if a user has been deleted from an account, that user name is still not available for re-use. Once a user name is stored it is unusable to anyone else who wants to use that user name.
The email address, secret question and secret answer are used when it is necessary to send a new password when if the viewer forgets the assigned password.
Once you have created a new user, it will be added to the list of viewers on the Viewers page.
You can edit or change your Name, Address, Email address and Time Zone by selecting the 'Contact Info' link.
By selecting the 'Phone' link, you can change the label you assigned to your phone. This label is displayed in maps and in the address lists to the right of the maps.
